Definition of Excess Sweating / Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the excessive production of sweat. There are many forms of hyperhidrosis and this condition affects a large portion of the general population.

Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFHH) is the most common form of hyperhidrosis and is defined as excessive sweating, not caused by physical activity, that appears symmetrically in a localized fashion. It may be an inherited condition that usually appears in adolescence, but it can also begin in childhood or even in infancy.

PFHH most frequently affects the underarms, hands and feet. While it does not endanger the life or physical health of the individual, it can cause significant negative impact on the quality of life and cause difficulty with work, school and social relationships. Let's have a detailed look at this condition.

Absolute definition - Hyperhidrosis:

  • Greater than 20 mg of sweat per min per palm

Functional definition:

  • Excessive sweating causing discomfort or embarrassment for the person involved
  • May vary from person to person
